NovaStar VX1000 Pro Setup Guide: Cabling, Configuration & First Image

The NovaStar VX1000 Pro is an all-in-one LED display controller: video processor and sending card in a single 1U unit, with 10 Gigabit Ethernet outputs driving up to 6.5 million pixels. This guide walks through a first-time setup from unboxing to a live image, plus the configuration details that trip people up.

What you need before you start

• The VX1000 Pro and its power cord
• Your LED cabinets, each fitted with a NovaStar receiving card (A5s Plus, A7s Plus, A8s, A10s Pro, MRV series, etc.)
• Cat5e or Cat6 cables — one run per Ethernet output, plus the daisy-chain jumpers between cabinets
• A video source: media server, laptop, camera switcher, or a USB drive with your content
• For full configuration: a Windows PC with NovaLCT, or a browser for the built-in Unico web interface

Inputs: 1× HDMI 2.0 (IN and LOOP), 2× HDMI 1.3, 1× 3G-SDI (IN and LOOP), 1× USB 3.0 for playing images and video straight from a USB drive, and one 10G fiber input (OPT 1).

Outputs: 10× Gigabit Ethernet to the LED wall, 2× 10G fiber for long runs, and 1× HDMI 1.3 monitoring output so you can see what the wall is showing from front of house. Audio in/out is 3.5 mm.

One spec that matters: only the HDMI 2.0 input accepts 4K (up to 4096×2160@60Hz, or ultra-wide custom resolutions to 8192 pixels). The HDMI 1.3 and SDI inputs top out at 1920×1080@60Hz. If your 4K source is plugged into an HDMI 1.3 port, that is why it looks wrong.

Step 1 — Cable the wall

Each Gigabit Ethernet port carries roughly 650,000 pixels at 60Hz/8-bit. Plan your port runs so no daisy-chain exceeds that, and balance the chains so ports carry similar loads. All 10 ports together give the VX1000 Pro its 6.5-million-pixel capacity, with a maximum output width of 10,240 pixels or height of 8,192 pixels — which is why this unit shows up on so many ultra-wide retail and stage walls. Step 2 — Pick a working mode

The VX1000 Pro has three working modes, selectable from the front panel menu:

• Video Controller — the normal all-in-one mode: process the input, scale it, and drive the wall. Start here.
• Fiber Converter — turns the unit into an Ethernet-to-fiber converter for long-distance runs.
• ByPass — zero-frame-latency passthrough for latency-critical applications like broadcast and xR stages. Processing features are reduced; the signal goes straight through.

Step 3 — Screen configuration

For a regular grid of identical cabinets, you don't need a computer: the front-panel knob and screen walk you through quick configuration — cabinet rows × columns, which Ethernet port feeds which chain, and the data direction. The controller reads the cabinet specs from the receiving cards and builds the mapping.

For irregular layouts, mixed cabinets, or receiving-card tuning, use NovaLCT (Screen Configuration → Ethernet Port & Screen Connection), the Unico web interface built into the controller, or the VICP mobile app. If your cabinets came with a manufacturer .rcfgx file, load it to the receiving cards first — you can sanity-check any .rcfgx in our free RCFGX viewer before sending it to hardware.

Save the configuration to hardware when the layout is right. It persists through power cycles.

Step 4 — Inputs and layers

Select your input from the front panel or software. The VX1000 Pro supports up to 6 layers (each up to 2K), so you can run picture-in-picture, side-by-side sources, or a base video with camera insets. Layers scale freely — a 1080p camera can fill a 4,000-pixel-wide wall section. Output scaling means the input resolution doesn't have to match the wall resolution.

Step 5 — Presets

Once you have looks you like (input + layer layout + sizes), save them as presets. The VX1000 Pro stores up to 256 user presets, and recalling one is a single button press — this is how operators do fast, clean look changes during a show.

Image quality features worth turning on

• Pixel-level brightness and chroma calibration — the controller works with NovaStar's calibration system to even out brightness and color differences between modules.
• 12-bit processing keeps gradients smooth after scaling and brightness cuts.
• Genlock syncs the wall to house reference for camera work; pair it with ByPass mode for the lowest latency.
• Light sensor input automates brightness against ambient light.
• 3D — works with third-party 3D emitters for active-3D installations.

Troubleshooting a blank wall

1. Check the working mode — a unit left in Fiber Converter or ByPass mode won't behave like a controller.
2. Check the monitoring output — if the HDMI monitor out shows your source, the input side is fine and the problem is in screen configuration or cabling.
3. Test one cabinet — plug a single cabinet into port 1 and send a test pattern from the front panel. If it lights, the chain or the port mapping is the issue.
4. Mind the input limits — 4K only works on the HDMI 2.0 port.
