Enter your screen size and pixel pitch to instantly get resolution, cabinet count, power draw, viewing distance — and the NovaStar Gigabit data ports you'll need to drive it.
Power and viewing distance are industry rule-of-thumb estimates. For an exact controller + receiving-card configuration, use our Processor Calculator or contact our team at 321-747-3220.
Planning an LED video wall starts with three numbers: the physical size, the pixel pitch, and the cabinet you're building from. From those, this free calculator works out the resolution, total pixels, cabinet count, viewing distance, estimated power draw, and the NovaStar Gigabit data ports needed to drive it — which tells you the controller and receiving cards to spec.
Once you know the port count, browse NovaStar controllers and sending cards, receiving cards, or run the Processor Calculator to match an exact model. You can also read a configuration file with our RCFGX viewer.
Divide the screen width and height (in millimetres) by the pixel pitch. For example, a 6 m wide wall at 2.9 mm pitch is about 6000 ÷ 2.9 ≈ 2069 pixels wide. This calculator does the math for you, in feet or metres, and also reports total pixels and pixel density.
A common rule of thumb is a minimum viewing distance (in metres) roughly equal to the pixel pitch in millimetres, with the comfortable or optimal distance about 2.5 times that. So a 2.9 mm wall blends from ~2.9 m and looks best from ~7 m. Lower pitch = closer viewing.
Each Gigabit Ethernet port on a NovaStar controller carries roughly 650,000 pixels. Divide your total pixel count by that to estimate the number of ports — which then points you to the right controller or sending card. This calculator shows the port count automatically.
Indoor LED walls typically draw up to ~250 W/m² at maximum and around a third of that on average content; outdoor walls run much higher (600–900 W/m²). This tool estimates average and peak power from your screen area and environment.
