How to Repair an Outdoor LED Display: P6 / P8 / P10 Module Replacement
Most outdoor LED display repairs come down to swapping one of four parts: a module, a power supply, a receiving card, or a cable. This guide covers the most visible repair — replacing a failed module on a P6, P8, or P10 outdoor display — and how to tell when the module isn't actually the problem. What P6 / P8 / P10 means
The number is the pixel pitch in millimeters — the distance between LED centers. A P6 module has pixels every 6 mm, P10 every 10 mm. Pitch, module dimensions, scan rate, and driver IC together define which replacement module fits your sign; two modules that look identical from the front can be electrically incompatible.
Is it really the module?
- One module shows wrong colors, garbage, or partial rows while its neighbors are fine — module or its ribbon cable. Reseat the flat ribbon cable first; it's the free fix that works surprisingly often.
- One module fully dark — check its power connector before condemning it. A rectangular group of dark modules is usually the shared power supply instead: see our power supply replacement guide.
- A whole cabinet is dark or scrambled — receiving card or data cabling, not a module: see the receiving card replacement guide.
Replacing an outdoor module, step by step
- Kill power to the sign at the breaker. Outdoor cabinets carry line voltage to each power supply.
- Get to the back of the module. Rear-service cabinets: open the cabinet door and unscrew the module (typically 4–8 machine screws into standoffs). Front-service cabinets: the module lifts off magnets or releases with a front-service tool.
- Photograph the connections, then unplug the flat data ribbon(s) and the 2-wire power pigtail. Note the ribbon orientation — pin-1 stripe placement matters.
- Match the replacement exactly: same pitch, same physical size, same scan rate, and the same (or a compatible) driver IC. The part number printed on the module's PCB is the safest match. - Install, reconnect, power up with full-white test content. Check the new module at multiple brightness levels.
Why the new module looks brighter
LEDs age. A brand-new module next to five-year-old neighbors will read noticeably brighter and cooler. That's normal; on a NovaStar-controlled sign, per-module calibration in NovaLCT can blend it in, or it will weather in over months of runtime.
Ribbon cables and hub boards
