LED Sign Power Supply Replacement: Symptoms, Matching & Safe Swap

A failed power supply is the single most common repair on an LED sign. The tell is a clean rectangular block of the display going dark — one supply feeds a group of modules, so when it dies, its whole zone dies with it. This guide covers diagnosing a bad supply, reading the label so you order the right replacement, and swapping it safely. Symptoms of a failing LED sign power supply

  • A rectangular section is completely dark while the rest of the sign plays normally — the classic dead-supply signature
  • The dark section comes back at low brightness but drops out when the sign runs bright content — the supply sags under load before it fails outright
  • Flicker or shimmering confined to one zone, especially on hot afternoons — thermal shutdown cycling
  • Audible hum or whine from the cabinet, or a supply with visibly bulged or leaking capacitors on inspection

The distinction that matters: power problems make zones dark; data problems make zones wrong. Reading the label: what to order

Open the cabinet and find the sticker on the failed unit. You need three things:

  1. Output voltage — match it exactly. Most LED modules run on 5V. Some energy-saving modules run 4.5V or 4.2V, and some cabinets use 12V or 24V for fans, controllers, or LED strips. A 5V supply on a 4.2V module will cook it — voltage is not a “close enough” spec.
  2. Wattage — equal or higher. A 200W supply can be replaced by a 200W or 350W unit of the same voltage; the sign only draws what it needs. Undersizing causes full-white dropouts.
  3. Form factor and rating. Indoor cabinets typically use open-frame or enclosed supplies; outdoor signs in wet locations use sealed, potted units (IP67-rated). Replace sealed with sealed — an enclosed indoor supply in a rain-exposed cabinet is a short repair interval.

Replacing it: the safe sequence

  1. Disconnect mains power at the breaker — not just the sign's power switch. Sign cabinets have exposed line-voltage terminals.
  2. Photograph the wiring before touching anything. You'll typically find L/N/ground on the AC side and multiple V+/V− pairs feeding module groups on the DC side.
  3. Label and move wires one terminal at a time from old supply to new. Screw terminals should be snug — loose DC terminals are a future flicker complaint.
  4. Restore power and run full-white test content for several minutes. Full white is maximum draw; a swap that survives it is done.

Why supplies fail (and how to stop replacing them)

Heat, moisture, and dust kill supplies — usually in that order. If a cabinet eats a supply every season: check that cooling fans spin, clear dust from supply vents, verify door gaskets on outdoor cabinets, and consider stepping the sign's maximum brightness down — running at 80% cuts thermal stress dramatically on a sign that's brighter than it needs to be.
